Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Drive carefully, arrive safely, wear your seat belts, and pass the food!

Once you're done stuffing yourself silly, going back for seconds, having a few slices of pie, collapsing into and then recovering from a diabetic coma, turn your attention to dancing off all those excess calories!

This Friday, Sauté will again be hosting a Swing night, with music from the Old School Swing Band, and dance music DJ'ed during band breaks by our own fabulous Julie Wood!

Other weekend musical and dancing attractions include Tommy Dardar, Earl Gilliam, Klockwork, the Fab 5, Disco Expressions, Bayou City Swing, the Autorama, Alan Haynes, Demitasse, Blue Room, Central Market, and HSDS's 5th Sunday dance... so if you're not dancing, well, who's the turkey now? Visit the Calendar, ask on the Forum, make plans!

Portland Fusion Exchange (PFX), Jan 9-11, 2009

Fusion needs no introduction for those of you who attended 2008's Houston Fusion Exchange, but for those of you who may be wondering "what's this all about?", read on ...

What is Fusion? Fusion is the combination of dances in such a way that allows dancers to use all the techniques, connections, and movements of many dances (in particular swing and blues, or blues and tango, or west coast and blues). This is a constant communication from lead to follow (and vice versa) that uses the dancers' knowledge of more than one dance to flow from one dance to another (i.e. leading a boleo inside a blues song, a blues follow would never loosen her leg and swing it around like in a boleo) within a song/dance.

Fusion is fun and it's for everyone. Tired of hearing all of the "No" in dance? Start saying YES with fusion.

The trip's a bit further for the Portland Fusion Exchange (Portland, OR), but promises to once again offer a one-of-a-kind chance to take what you know and blend it to create something new and amazing. Produced by Ivy Grey (formerly of Houston) and Andrew Sutton, this event comes "highly recommended".

The price includes 3 days of classes, 3 nights of dancing, at least 3 meals, an amazing line-up of instructors and DJs. . . and a live band on Saturday night!

Weekly Dances Roundup 2008!

Perhaps you've been wondering, "where can I dance tonight?!" Well, while there's not a Swing dance every night of the week, there's still plenty to do! Our Editor's Picks for weekly dances:

What else to do? Check the Calendar for a variety of other dance opportunities (and for times/details/cost for the aforementioned picks), or check out any of Houston's excellent and dancer-friendly live music venues such as The Big Easy, The Continental Club, or Dan Electro's! As always, we recommend visiting the HSO Forum to find out where people will be (and recruit more dancers!) before making the trip!

Austin Lindy Exchange 9 - Nov. 21st-23rd

Austin Lindy Exchange 9 is coming up soon, this November 21st-23rd! If you've never been to an exchange, you can expect to dance-dance-dance, get very little sleep, meet people from all around the country, and in-general have a fabulous time! In their words ...

Duckies and dolls! It's time for ALX 9: To the Nines! This year, we're bringing you back to The Jazz Age. This was the time of flappers and fellas, swell duds and scratch. The Charleston was all the rage, and you had to get your bootleg from a bathtub. Spirits (and skirts) were high because of this hot, new thing called Jazz. Not your mama's parlor music. This will be the swankest hop you ever gatecrashed.

So don't be a wet blanket. Come join us for a roaring good time! And be sure to put your best foot forward; ragamuffins are all washed up.

If you're interested in carpooling, have questions about Exchanges, etc, visit the Forum and ask about ALX 9! Online registration ends soon.

This Weekend: Sauté, Blue Room, Demitasse, & more! Nov 13th-16th

First, the bad news: Due to a venue issue, there will be no dance at Taft Coffee this month (they'll resume December 13th).

Now, the good news! There are tons of dance opportunities this weekend! A few highlights from the Calendar...

...and if you've made it this far, why not keep on going into next week...
(Although we strive to keep the Calendar current and accurate, we always recommend chatting up events on the Forum first if you want to be sure other dancers will be there!)
